The first Seed Library in Hamilton County is opening on Sunday, March 4th at 2:00 p.m. in the program room at Carmel-Clay Public Library, 55 4th Ave SE, Carmel, Indiana 46032. Hamilton County Library Card holders must present their cards when checking out seeds. Patrons can check out up to 5 packets per visit with a total of 15 packets in a season March – October.
Ben Cohen from Michigan has opened over 30 seed libraries and will provide a brief introduction of the Hamilton County seed library. He will focus on making sure everyone understands how a seed library works, how the community participates and most importantly, why their participation is so important. He will also talk about self-pollinating annuals and the seeds that are the easiest to save and return every year.
The HCMGA will also present the Carmel Clay Public Library with a book donation. Title: The Saved Seed K-4 Children’s Book. Author: Brenda Moore.
The HCMGA will provide 4 educational programs throughout the season, with the first one being scheduled for Thursday, March 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the program room at the library. The presentation will be given by Jennifer Lambert and Shelli Broadbent on the topic of Direct Sowing of cool weather crops and soil preparation. This presentation will be just in time for Spring planting!
